The town of Sangre Grande is reeling after the tragic murder of 30-year-old Shannel Lewis, a respected mother and physical instructor. Lewis was ambushed and fatally shot while walking to work around 8 am yesterday. A lone gunman attacked her, firing shots to her head and abdomen before fleeing in a white Nissan March.
Authorities were alerted around 8:30 am, and officers from the Sangre Grande CID and Task Force quickly arrived at the scene. They found Lewis bleeding profusely on Brooklyn Road. Paramedics from the Emergency Health Services arrived and confirmed she was still alive, rushing her to Sangre Grande Hospital, where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community. Residents described Lewis as a warm, friendly, and respectable young woman. Her uncle, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed deep sorrow but chose to remain anonymous. He labeled Lewis as bright and intelligent, further deepening the mystery of her untimely death.
Police remain without leads or a motive, but are hopeful that CCTV footage may provide clues. Neighbours recalled hearing two loud explosions, noting that Lewis’s car was in the garage, which is why she was walking.
