Dairy Farmers Hope Carney Will Resist US Pressure on Supply Management
The president of the Syndicat des producteurs de lait de la Gaspésie, a dairy farmers’ union in the Gaspésie region, has expressed hope that the Carney administration will resist pressure from the United States regarding supply management. The Trump administration has threatened to impose tariffs of 50% on several hundred Canadian-made products if its demands are not met.
According to reports, three sectors in particular appear to be a source of irritation for the US. The US has been pushing for changes to Canada’s supply management system, which regulates the production and sale of dairy products.
The dairy farmers’ union is counting on the Carney administration to stand firm against US pressure and protect the interests of Canadian dairy farmers. The union’s president has stated that the administration’s stance on supply management will be crucial in the face of ongoing trade negotiations with the US.
