Armenia’s internationally significant Areni-1 Cave has been officially added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, marking a key step toward full World Heritage designation.
The cave, located in the Arpa River Valley, is renowned for archaeological evidence of prehistoric life and early winemaking, including what is considered the world’s oldest known winery. The nomination, titled “Areni-1 Cave: Prehistoric Life and Winemaking in the Arpa River Valley,” was registered during the 48th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.
Inclusion on the tentative list is the first formal step for any site aspiring to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. It signals that Armenia considers the site of outstanding universal value and intends to prepare a full nomination dossier.
The move is expected to boost global attention on Armenia’s archaeological heritage and could lead to increased tourism and conservation funding for the region.
