Hurricane Dorian Strengthens Near St. Thomas, Puerto Rico on Alert

Hurricane Dorian has officially become a hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 mph as it churned near St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center. Multiple observations of hurricane-force winds were reported on St. Thomas, prompting urgent warnings for the region.

The NHC issued a hurricane warning for Vieques, Culebra, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, where hurricane conditions are expected within the next 6 to 12 hours. Puerto Rico is under both a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning, as the storm moves northwest at 13 mph.

Residents in Puerto Rico are urged to monitor local weather alerts and prepare for potential impacts as Dorian approaches. The storm’s minimum central pressure is 997 mb, and further strengthening is possible.
