Authorities in the Netherlands have arrested three suspects in connection with the theft of smartphones worth approximately €5 million in the vicinity of Schiphol Airport. The arrests, which took place in the weeks following the June 18 incident, include a transport company employee suspected of providing information to an organized crime group.
The Marechaussee, the branch of the military responsible for securing Dutch ports and borders, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday. Among those taken into custody are two 24-year-old men from Amsterdam and a 39-year-old from Zoetermeer in Zuid-Holland. The stolen cargo consisted of smartphones with a street value of around €5 million.
‘The investigation is focusing on an organized crime group,’ the Marechaussee said in a statement. ‘Among the arrested suspects is an employee of a transport company at Schiphol, who may have passed on information to the criminal organization.’ Authorities did not specify when the arrests occurred or whether any of the stolen cargo has been recovered.
The case is being led by the Public Prosecution Service of Noord-Holland, and the investigation remains ongoing. The Marechaussee indicated that further arrests are possible as the case develops.
