Malawi Government Launches Free Surgery Campaign at Kamuzu Central Hospital

The Malawi Government, through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, has launched a free surgical programme that will provide specialized medical procedures to hundreds of patients at three referral hospitals across the country. The 2026 East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) Medical and Surgical Camps were launched on Monday at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. The initiative aims to reduce the backlog of surgical cases and improve access to life-saving procedures for vulnerable populations. Patients will receive treatments ranging from general surgery to specialized operations at no cost, alleviating financial barriers that often delay critical care. Health officials say the camps will rotate among the three referral hospitals, ensuring wider geographic coverage.
