Messi Breaks Down in Tears After Likely Final World Cup Defeat

Lionel Messi could not hold back the tears on Sunday after Argentina lost the World Cup final to Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The 39-year-old, playing what is likely his last World Cup, received his runner-up medal from U.S. President Donald Trump before breaking down while applauding the Argentine fans.

Messi, who scored eight goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick against Algeria, was emotional as both Argentine and Spanish supporters chanted his name. This was the second World Cup final loss of his career, the first being in 2014 against Germany.

Spain dominated the final from start to finish, winning in extra time. French forward Kylian Mbappé took home the Golden Boot with 10 goals, surpassing Messi’s 21 career World Cup goals. Messi now holds the second-highest goal tally in World Cup history.
