Melbourne’s Night-Time Economy Grows Six Times Faster Than National Average

Melbourne has recorded Australia’s fastest-growing night-time economy, with employment expanding more than six times the national average, according to the latest Measuring the Night-time Economy Report 2026.

The report reveals that between 2024 and 2025, the city added nearly 3,000 new jobs and almost 180 new venues. This surge is driven by Melburnians increasingly embracing the city after dark, both on weeknights and weekends.

A significant portion of the growth came from the food sector, which saw a boom in new restaurants and cafes operating late into the night. The findings highlight Melbourne’s strong economic recovery and its position as a national leader in night-time culture and employment.

Local officials have welcomed the figures, noting that the night-time economy is becoming a critical pillar of the city’s overall economic health. The trend is expected to continue as more businesses extend their hours to meet demand.
