Italy’s Inflation Climbs 2.7% as Housing and Food Costs Rise Sharply

Italian consumers are feeling the pinch after official data revealed inflation surged 2.7% year-on-year in April 2026, according to ISTAT, Italy’s National Institute of Statistics. The monthly increase stood at 1.1%.

The biggest driver was housing, water, electricity, and fuel costs, which jumped 5.1% compared to the same period last year. Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 2.9%, while tobacco and alcoholic beverages increased 2.7%. Transport costs also climbed 3.8%.

The figures highlight persistent cost-of-living pressures for Italian households, with essential goods and services seeing significant price hikes. The data comes as the Bank of Italy and European Central Bank continue to monitor inflation trends amid a fragile economic recovery.

Economists are watching closely to see if price rises will moderate in the coming months, especially with energy costs remaining high. For now, Italian families are facing steeper bills for basic necessities.
