Minister Torerai Moyo Issues Final Warning: Schools Must Adopt Heritage-Based Curriculum or Face Closure

Zimbabwe’s Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo has issued a stern warning to schools across the country: adopt the Heritage-Based Curriculum (HBC) by next year or risk deregistration and closure. Speaking at a recent event, Minister Moyo stressed that every school operating in Zimbabwe must implement the government-approved curriculum, even if they also offer other educational programs.

The minister’s directive is part of a broader push by the government to standardize the education system and ensure all learners benefit from a curriculum that reflects Zimbabwe’s heritage and values. Schools that fail to comply will face consequences, including possible closure.

While schools are permitted to offer additional curricula, the HBC is now mandatory. The move has sparked debate among educators and parents, with some expressing concerns about the readiness of schools to adopt the new system. However, the ministry has insisted that the deadline is non-negotiable.
