Why making friends in Norway is so tough – and how to succeed

It’s no secret that Norway has a reputation as a tough place to forge new friendships. But does it have to be such a challenge? The Local’s Robin-Ivan Capar offers tips for those seeking to broaden their social circles.

By almost any measuring stick, Norway is a fantastic country to live in – good quality of life, high wages, robust safety net, stunning landscapes. Yet beneath this romanticized exterior, many newcomers discover a surprising challenge: making friends.

Capar suggests enrolling in Norwegian language courses like those at Lingu, Speak Norsk, or Folkeuniversitetet. These classes not only help overcome the language barrier but also introduce like-minded people in similar positions. The bonds formed can extend beyond the classroom.

Taking the initiative and being persistent is key. Norwegians can be reserved, so don’t wait for others to make the first move. Invite someone for coffee, suggest a hike, or organize a small get-together within a club or activity. Keep trying without being pushy.

Picking up sports locals enjoy, such as skiing, football, or martial arts, can quickly immerse you in the community. Joining a local sports team has worked for Capar and many other internationals. The thrill of competition and post-game celebrations help create bonds.

Reevaluating expectations is also important. Capar notes he has a close Norwegian friend he meets every two weeks but has never visited his home – something that would be unusual in his home country but feels fine in Norway. Acknowledging that relationships may take unconventional forms can be rewarding.

Continuing with hobbies in Norway, whether singing in a choir, fitness at a gym like SATS, or board games at places like Outland, opens doors to meeting fellow enthusiasts. Work friendships are also valuable – colleagues often socialize outside work and can introduce you to broader networks.
