Dearborn Receives $8.1M FEMA Grant for Flood Prevention Upgrades

The City of Dearborn has secured $8.1 million in federal funds from FEMA to upgrade its stormwater management system. The grant will finance the installation of flapgates, designed to prevent backflow during heavy rains and reduce neighborhood flooding.

Mayor Abdullah Hammoud announced the funding, emphasizing the project’s role in protecting residents and property. ‘Rather than individual backflow devices, these flapgates serve entire neighborhoods, making flood mitigation more efficient,’ Hammoud said.

The initiative comes as part of broader efforts to modernize Dearborn’s aging sewer infrastructure and improve resilience against extreme weather events. The project is expected to begin in the coming months, with completion anticipated within two years.
