Assam Family’s Compassionate Civet Rescue Becomes an Educational Lesson

In a touching tale of compassion and wildlife conservation, an Assam family’s effort to rehabilitate an orphaned palm civet has been immortalized in the NCERT Class 10 English curriculum. The civet, affectionately known as Bhakat, was rescued by Dharani Saikia and his family in 2009, when they found the tiny cub abandoned in Tetelisora village.

This remarkable story of nurturing has now resurfaced, as Gibon, Dharani’s son, discovered himself as the baby in the photographs within his textbooks. This revelation not only rekindled memories of his childhood but also spotlighted the importance of showing kindness towards animals, especially those often misunderstood, like the palm civet.

The chapter titled ‘Baby Bhakat’ not only teaches students about wildlife but also instills a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Highlighting the role of civets in nature, it sheds light on the challenges these creatures face due to habitat loss and misconceptions, encouraging a progressive change in perspective towards wildlife.

As this story reaches classrooms across India, it serves as a reminder that acts of kindness can create ripples, influencing future generations towards compassionate conservation efforts.
