APNU Member of Parliament Sherod Duncan has commented on the ongoing controversy surrounding President Irfaan Ali’s reported Long Creek farm, suggesting that it reflects broader public frustration regarding land access, inequality, and the distribution of oil wealth in Guyana. Duncan noted that social media reactions indicate significant anger among the populace.
He highlighted allegations concerning 150 acres of land and a reported $22 million investment, stating that citizens are questioning how large parcels of land can be allocated to those in power while ordinary individuals wait for years to secure a house lot. Duncan emphasized that many Guyanese struggle to obtain even a small residential plot, with the average house lot being a fraction of an acre.
According to Duncan, this situation illustrates a “disproportionate” pattern in the development of the country’s wealth and opportunities. He expressed that many citizens do not feel a genuine sense of ownership in Guyana’s economy, particularly as the nation benefits from oil revenues. “The people of this country are tremendously angry at the disproportionate nature in which the wealth of this country is being developed,” Duncan stated.
He further remarked that citizens do not perceive the benefits they should be receiving from the oil economy, asserting, “We are simply not feeling the effects that we should be feeling of this oil economy.” Duncan also suggested that the government may be running out of ideas and time, as public frustration continues to grow.
In response to the controversy, President Ali has rejected claims that the farm was a hidden discovery, asserting that the property has been public knowledge and known to Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. Ali stated that the farm is associated with a significant loan, was established through legitimate means, and has been declared to the Integrity Commission during and after his time in office. He denied receiving any special treatment or government benefits related to the farm and claimed that the same conditions applicable to other leased lands along the highway also apply to his property. Ali accused Mohamed of exaggerating both the size and value of the farm, insisting that there is “absolutely nothing to hide” and expressing pride in being called a farmer.
