The opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has called for President Irfaan Ali to disclose his financial affairs to clarify the acquisition of a reported 150-acre farm and related properties located off the Linden-Soesdyke Highway. The party emphasized that in a democratic society, no public official is above scrutiny, and the President must address these inquiries to provide the accountability that the citizens of Guyana deserve.
In a statement, the PNCR/APNU urged the President to make full disclosure of his income, assets, liabilities, and the financial arrangements linked to the lands. They argued that such transparency would help dispel doubts, enhance public confidence, and demonstrate a commitment to good governance principles.
Following a video posted by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, which showcased various aspects of the modern farm, President Ali acknowledged ownership but stated that his declaration to the Integrity Commission and bank records would confirm that he borrowed funds to invest in the property. The farm includes livestock, fruit production, an electricity transmission network, and various structures for poultry and cattle.
President Ali, a former Minister of Housing and Water, denied any misuse of his office privileges to acquire the land and infrastructure, asserting that the farm existed prior to his presidency and that all assets have been declared to the Integrity Commission. He stated, “There is absolutely no State involvement or financing for anything on my farm.”
The PNCR/APNU also raised concerns regarding previous fraud-related charges against President Ali, which were discontinued after he took office, suggesting that these issues related to the lands in question. They demanded clear and transparent answers regarding the ownership of the farm and the financing of its lease, which reportedly amounts to approximately GY$25 million annually, in light of the President’s monthly salary being just under GY$4 million.
The party reiterated that as President, Dr. Ali has a fiduciary responsibility to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability, and the public is entitled to know how his wealth was acquired and whether all relevant declarations have been made in accordance with the law.
