Walston Martins, the Chairman of the Buxton-Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council, has expressed his views regarding proposed legislation that would provide former presidents with unlimited benefits and tax exemptions. During a protest on the Buxton Public Road, he stated that he would only support the bill if the government increases pensions, salaries, and other benefits for ordinary citizens.
Martins proposed specific financial increases, including a GY$400,000 after-tax salary for public servants, a GY$120,000 cash grant for school children, a GY$100,000 old age pension, and free land for each adult. He emphasized that these measures should be implemented before the bill is passed, stating, “If you want this bill to pass, I don’t have a problem but ensure that these things that I spoke about are given before and then you can pass the Bill.” He criticized the bill, calling it “ridiculous in its entirety.”
He also mentioned that he does not believe the suggested increases would lead to inflation or a rise in the cost of living. The proposed bill aims to replace the 2015 Former Presidents (Benefits and Other Facilities) Act, which currently caps certain benefits for former presidents. The new legislation would remove these caps and allow for additional benefits, including a monthly pension exceeding GY$2 million.
Martins is not alone in his opposition to the bill. Other political figures, such as Kidackie Amsterdam from the Working People’s Alliance and Annette Ferguson from the People’s National Congress Reform, are also advocating for the bill to be quashed. Amsterdam estimated that the uncapped benefits could cost the treasury between GY$100 million and GY$200 million annually, funds he believes could be better used to support pensioners.
Amsterdam plans to organize a panel discussion to raise public awareness and support against the legislation. He expressed concern about the potential for the current president, Irfaan Ali, to benefit from tax exemptions related to his farm, which he believes could generate significant profits without contributing taxes to the nation.
Ferguson also highlighted the importance of public awareness regarding the financial implications of the bill, suggesting that increased awareness could lead to greater public pushback against the government’s plans.
