Guyana: Labour Minister Reports Job Creation and Emphasis on Equal Opportunity in Guyana

Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning Keoma Griffith has stated that the economic progress of Guyana should be evaluated not just by growth metrics, but also by the inclusivity of job opportunities across different ethnic backgrounds. During a panel discussion at the Ethnic Relations Commission’s National Symposium, Griffith highlighted that the government has successfully created more than 104,000 jobs in recent years. Additionally, over 16,000 individuals have received training aimed at enhancing their access to employment opportunities.

Griffith emphasized that these job opportunities have been accessible to citizens from various backgrounds. He remarked, “These are persons from diverse backgrounds, and they have all been able to take advantage of opportunities irrespective of their race. Talent has no ethnicity, and excellence has no race. This is a government that will continue to promote equal opportunity in Guyana.”

From a labour perspective, Griffith noted that providing equal access to jobs and training is a significant method for fostering national unity. He asserted that the government has a responsibility to contribute to a more cohesive society by eliminating discrimination and dismantling barriers that hinder progress. “It is the duty of the state to enhance the cohesion of society by eliminating discrimination,” he stated. “As a government, every day we strive to remove discriminatory barriers.”

However, Griffith also pointed out that the responsibility for unity does not rest solely with the government. He encouraged every citizen to reject misinformation, stereotypes, and the use of race for political purposes. He urged Guyanese to resist divisive rhetoric and to support the notion that every citizen, regardless of ethnicity, has a rightful place and future in Guyana.
