Guyana: Election Fraud Trial Adjourned Until September Due to Witness Issues

The trial concerning alleged fraud in the 2020 General and Regional Elections in Guyana has been postponed until September due to witness availability issues. The prosecution’s plans for a week filled with critical state evidence were disrupted by unforeseen circumstances, leading to a significant delay in the proceedings.

During the week, the prosecution faced two major setbacks that halted the trial. The first occurred on Monday when the prosecution attempted to call Daniel Giddings, a former IT Manager at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), to testify. Giddings, who is currently residing outside of Guyana, was proposed to give his testimony via Zoom. However, this move was met with strong opposition from defense counsel Nigel Hughes, who argued that Giddings should be physically present in court for effective cross-examination. This disagreement led to a lengthy debate, ultimately resulting in the cancellation of Monday’s session.

The situation worsened on Wednesday when the lead prosecutor, King’s Counsel Darshan Ramdhani, announced that another key witness had encountered an emergency and could not attend the court. With no backup witness available, Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty had no choice but to adjourn the trial.

The adjournment represents a significant setback for the prosecution in a case that has garnered considerable public and political attention. The trial involves nine defendants, including high-profile political figures, who face multiple charges related to conspiracy and misconduct in public office. All defendants have denied the allegations and remain on self-bail as the case is set to resume in September.

The trial centers on serious allegations regarding the tabulation and declaration of results from the contentious March 2, 2020, elections, which led to a prolonged political crisis in the country.
