Guyana: Miners Trapped in Collapsed Mining Pit in Guyana

Efforts are ongoing to rescue or recover two miners who became trapped in a collapsed gold mining pit located at St Elizabeth Backdam, Potaro, Region 8. The incident was reported by the Guyana Police Force, which identified the trapped individuals as Franky Hussain, 32, from the North West District, Region #1, and Neunes Neunes Da Silva, 38, a Brazilian pork-knocker.

The collapse occurred on Saturday at approximately 3:23 p.m. According to preliminary investigations, the miners were working in a pit that was about 60 feet deep, along with other workers, when sections of both the eastern and western walls of the pit collapsed. While the other workers were able to escape, Hussain and Da Silva were trapped beneath the debris, which also covered an excavator.

Authorities, including the police and representatives from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), are currently on-site conducting investigations into the incident. The owner of the mining operation, along with other workers, is actively involved in the recovery efforts for the trapped miners.
