A former inmate from Trinidad and Tobago’s prison system is using his story to spotlight the power of education and rehabilitation programs behind bars. He recently displayed dozens of certificates he earned during his years of incarceration, emphasizing the variety of programs available in facilities such as the Youth Training Centre (YTC) and Maximum Security Prison (MSP).
His achievements span a wide range of areas, including radio broadcasting, graphic design, data operations, and human resource management, among others. Despite facing significant challenges, particularly with the English subject, he persevered and successfully completed multiple CSEC subjects and CAPE studies.
One of his proudest moments was obtaining a Level Two Radio Broadcasting qualification, which equipped him with skills in presenting radio programmes, conducting interviews, and organizing content for broadcasts. He also actively participated in debate competitions and mentorship programmes, with several focusing on key life skills such as financial literacy and conflict resolution.
While reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the educational and rehabilitation opportunities afforded to him. However, he also noted that support often wanes after release, leaving many former inmates to navigate the reintegration process on their own.
His story is an important reminder that rehabilitation extends beyond incarceration. Many inmates use their time to acquire skills and qualifications that can aid in rebuilding their lives and making positive contributions to society. As he concluded his presentation, he hinted at future content detailing other aspects of his personal development journey.
