President Dr. Irfaan Ali outlined a plan to strengthen Guyana’s cybersecurity and digital resilience architecture during a press conference. The initiative is part of the country’s transition to a more technology-driven economy, which includes the development of a national payment platform and expanding energy infrastructure. Ali emphasized the need for stronger protections for national data and critical assets.
The government is refining a national cybersecurity strategy that will support the broader digital transformation agenda. This strategy includes the establishment of a cyber emergency response team that will operate 24/7 to address cyber threats and challenges effectively.
Ali mentioned that the government aims to integrate Guyana’s security systems with regional and international partners. He noted that artificial intelligence and predictive security measures would enhance the security system and facilitate integration with regional systems.
Major investments will be directed towards digital resilience as Guyana approaches the full implementation of its national payment system by the end of the year. The President highlighted that users will be able to conduct transactions via QR codes and mobile devices, with some local banks already prepared for this transition.
As Guyana expands its oil, gas, and industrial infrastructure, protecting critical systems from cyber threats has become a national priority. Ali referenced various developments, including the Wales Development Zone and petrochemical facilities, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity in these areas.
A specialized energy sector cyber defense strategy is also being developed to secure the expanding energy industry and sensitive data systems. The President noted the critical nature of data in the energy sector and the need for robust protections to ensure data sovereignty.
Additionally, Guyana’s legislative framework will be updated to align with evolving international cybersecurity standards. The objective is to protect the nation’s digital infrastructure and systems.
