DPP Moves to Charge Officers in Controversial Samaroo Shooting, Police Commissioner Confirms

The law enforcement officers involved in the fatal shooting of Joshua Samaroo and the severe injury of his common-law spouse, Kaia Sealy, are possibly facing criminal charges. The directives for action have been issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro confirmed this on May 21, 2026, after a review of the investigative file by DPP Roger Gaspard.

However, no officers have been formally arrested or charged. The investigators are still carrying out the DPP’s instructions before progressing to the next phase. This development follows the receipt of the long-awaited forensic report related to the shooting incident that occurred on January 20, 2026.

The incident, which sparked national outrage, was caught on CCTV. The footage appears to show 31-year-old Samaroo with his hands outside their vehicle moments before officers opened fire. The police had previously claimed that the couple failed to stop during an attempted interception, resulting in a chase that ended in a fatal shooting.

Samaroo was killed on the spot while Sealy sustained severe gunshot injuries, leaving her partially paralysed. The aftermath of the incident saw months of protests and public demonstrations, with relatives, activists, and supporters demanding justice for Samaroo and pressing for criminal charges against the officers involved.
