PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar Opens Indian-Funded Agro-Processing Facility to Strengthen Food Security

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar officially inaugurated a new agro-processing facility at Brechin Castle, Couva, cementing a significant step towards bolstering food security in Trinidad and Tobago. This facility has been realized with a generous donation of approximately one million US dollars from the Government of India, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in the face of global food challenges.

The state-of-the-art facility is equipped with advanced processing lines specifically designed for locally grown produce, including root crops, vegetables, and fruits. Each line features fully automated stainless steel mechanisms, which are expected to enhance the efficiency and output of local agricultural products. This development is a stride towards self-sustainability by reducing reliance on imported foodstuffs and supporting local farmers.

This project was initially launched in 2014, with much anticipation, but faced inevitable delays following a change in government. However, the current administration under the United National Congress vigorously revitalized the project, which now stands as a testament to their commitment to national food security.

At the inauguration ceremony, India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, was present, reiterating the strong bonds between the two nations and the shared goal of enhancing food systems. The collaboration is expected not only to benefit Trinidad and Tobago’s agricultural sector but also to serve as a model for similar initiatives in the Caribbean.

This agro-processing facility is part of a broader strategy to ensure that the country’s food systems are robust and resilient. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago views the facility as a catalyst for economic growth and development in the rural communities and a way to combat the global challenges of food insecurity. With production now underway, the facility aims to pave the way for future projects that promote agricultural innovation and sustainability across the region.
