Stuart Young Urges Formal Inquiry Into Alleged Concealment of Oil Spill Details

In a fervent call for accountability, former energy minister Stuart Young has demanded a formal investigation into the alleged concealment of details regarding an offshore oil spill. Young accused both Heritage Petroleum and the government of Trinidad and Tobago of intentionally withholding information about the spill, which occurred on May 1 in the Gulf of Paria.

Young’s allegations stem from concerns that crucial information was deliberately suppressed, adding that both the state-owned company and the governing administration failed to adequately inform the public. This, he claims, undermines public trust in how the country manages environmental incidents. Young has expressed particular worry over whether the oil spill detection system, established during the previous administration, remains operational.

The incident was reportedly minimized by Energy Minister Dr. Roodal Moonilal, who asserted that the spill, estimated at about ten barrels of oil, was contained within 48 hours. However, Young has challenged this narrative, suggesting the actual situation might have been more severe and not adequately communicated to the public and affected stakeholders.

The calls for an inquiry have not only shone a spotlight on the operational responses to such environmental occurrences but also raised questions about the handling of sensitive information concerning the environment and neighboring nations. This is underscored by the objections from Venezuela, which issued a communique condemning the spill for causing environmental damage to their coastal regions.

Amid these tensions, political analyst Dr. Shane Mohammed has noted that delays and insufficient communication risk exacerbating the already delicate relations with Venezuela. The handling of this spill and its ramifications illustrate significant challenges in maintaining transparency and fostering confidence in governmental operations.

Young has emphasized that for both public trust and better governance, clarity and accountability are essential. He has urged that all details be disclosed to ensure that the public and neighboring countries are reassured of Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns with the seriousness they warrant.
