The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has embarked on an ambitious nationwide clean-up and desilting programme. The primary goal of this initiative is to mitigate the impact of flooding, particularly in the upcoming rainy season. The announcement was made by Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath during a recent exercise in Dow Village, California.
This concerted effort is a collaborative endeavour involving regional corporations and the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. WASA is playing a pivotal role by contributing essential equipment and providing necessary personnel support.
The initiative took off in Barataria/San Juan and has progressively branched out to other areas, including Couva South. The focus is on communities that have been recurrently affected by flooding. The work scope primarily involves clearing drains, addressing issues linked to ageing WASA pipelines, and maintaining optimal functionality of the watercourses.
To tackle these challenges, specialised equipment such as vacuum units and gully suckers are being deployed in areas prone to flooding. More constituencies are expected to benefit from this initiative as it progresses over the coming weeks.
