A violent encounter early Sunday morning in Ste. Madeleine has resulted in the death of a man following a police shooting. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on April 26, 2026, on Old Trainline Road, where law enforcement was called after reports of a cutlass attack left two individuals wounded.
The suspect, identified as Shivnath Jogie, reportedly confronted officers armed with a cutlass and a hammer. Upon their arrival, police attempted to engage him, but the situation quickly escalated. Authorities allege that Jogie advanced towards the officers, reportedly attacking them with the weapons, which led the officers to fire in defense of their lives.
After being disarmed, Jogie was taken to San Fernando General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The police have recovered the weapons believed to have been used in the attack from the scene.
The condition of the two individuals who were initially reported as injured remains undisclosed. As investigations continue, authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the standard procedures regarding the use of lethal force by police officers.
