Georgetown City Council Moves to Court Over Massive Unpaid Debts

The Georgetown City Council is taking decisive legal action to address the financial strains impacting its operations. In a recent announcement, Mayor Alfred Mentor declared that the Council will be heading to court to recover hundreds of millions of dollars owed by both government agencies and private businesses. This move is expected to stabilize the city’s financial health, which has been under significant pressure due to these outstanding debts.

According to Mayor Mentor, the Council has already issued formal notices to the owing entities, marking the start of a comprehensive strategy to recover the unpaid funds. Notices are just the beginning. The mayor further pointed out that the Council plans to publish the names of the businesses and government agencies that continue to disregard their financial responsibilities. This public disclosure aims to encourage prompt settlement of debts by placing reputational pressure on the defaulters.

The financial difficulties faced by the City Council are compounded by recent developments where the government has moved to take over several city streets. This shift could further impact the financial portfolio of the Council. The mayor emphasized that the arrangement might need revisiting, especially concerning agreements with GPL, as these developments unfold. “We need to ensure any shifts in financial agreements align with the current fiscal reality of the city,” Mayor Mentor stressed.

While the Council grapples with unpaid dues, Mayor Mentor has underscored the necessity of bolstering tax collection efforts. Given the city’s mounting liabilities, a robust approach to tax collection has been identified as critical. The Mayor indicated that aggressive enforcement measures might be taken against both government entities and larger businesses with substantial tax arrears. “The city must act decisively to maintain financial stability,” he asserted.

In tandem with these revenue-collection efforts, the Georgetown City Council is actively pursuing legal channels to contest the government’s attempts to assume control of its properties. Legal proceedings have been initiated, particularly over the municipal building on Water Street, which is currently awaiting a hearing date. The Mayor signaled that more court papers would soon be filed regarding the government’s broader takeovers. This dual-pronged approach of court actions and strategic financial restructuring reflects the Council’s commitment to reinforcing its financial position and governance capabilities.
