In an effort to enhance public transportation and alleviate traffic congestion, the National Bus Company is actively considering the implementation of a new coastal route. This initiative, scheduled for execution by mid-May, is expected to offer a shorter travel time for commuters. The company’s strategic decision comes amid rising bus fares and a growing demand for efficient public transport solutions.
The proposed coastal route aims to utilize underused infrastructure, thereby optimizing transit efficiency and easing the burden on existing highways. Commuters, particularly those traveling long distances from southern regions such as Punta Gorda to Belize City, could benefit significantly from this development. According to the company, the new route will serve as a viable alternative for the southern corridor, which experiences some of the highest fare increases approved recently.
Currently, the National Bus Company serves a majority of highway commuters in Belize, covering approximately 65% of the highway travel market. Its commitment to maintaining the current fare rates amid widespread fare increases has been a relief to many commuters. Transport Minister Dr. Luis Sabinet noted that while the company is not raising its fares at this time, it retains the right to do so if fuel prices continue to rise.
While the new route primarily focuses on reducing travel times, it also plays a part in the company’s long-term vision of technological advancements in public transportation. Minister Sabinet emphasized that the future of the National Bus Company lies in transitioning to electric buses, a move intended to decrease operating costs and minimize environmental impact.
Looking to the future, the company remains steadfast in addressing the immediate needs of commuters while also considering the potential challenges of fluctuating fuel costs. Dr. Sabinet acknowledged that maintaining reasonable fares while ensuring efficient and improved services is a delicate balance, especially as operational costs fluctuate with global fuel prices. Nonetheless, the exploration of new routes and the continued focus on innovation indicate a positive trajectory for Belize’s public transport sector.
