A major infrastructure upgrade is set to revolutionize transportation in Berbice, as the government embarks on a US $604 million project to enhance the Palmyra to Moleson Creek Road. The project, one of the most significant road developments in Guyana, aims to modernize and expand transportation links along the eastern corridor.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill outlined the ambitious scope of the development, emphasizing its potential to significantly improve traffic flow and safety. “We’re transforming nearly 80 kilometers of roadway,” he confirmed to regional residents during a recent engagement. The plan includes road widening to accommodate four lanes, along with the installation of street lighting, sidewalks, and bypass roads to ease congestion at bottleneck points.
Two key construction firms, Ashoka Samudra and China Road and Bridge Corporation, have been tasked with executing the expansive project. The minister reassured citizens that the government is committed to maintaining high standards, noting that contractors have been instructed to deliver work that meets international quality benchmarks. “We expect nothing less than the highest quality,” Edghill reiterated, underscoring the longevity and safety imperative.
An essential aspect of the project’s strategy involves constructing bypass roads. These are designed to facilitate smoother traffic flow, particularly during peak hours. “We want to make sure that once you come off the ferry from Suriname, you can move from Moleson Creek to New Amsterdam seamlessly,” explained Edghill.
The need for such an upgrade has been recognized by local leaders as vital for accommodating future development. Region 6 Chairman Junior Benn and Parliamentarian Zamal Husain highlighted that the region is poised for growth, with new housing schemes and a potential bridge across the Corentyne River expected to increase traffic. Authorities are intent on future-proofing infrastructure to accommodate these advancements, ensuring that access to homes, schools, and businesses is maintained during the construction phase.
Spanning three years, this road transformation is expected to deliver lasting economic benefits by not only reducing travel time but also enhancing the safety and connectivity of residents and businesses throughout the region. The government and involved contractors remain under pressure to fulfill the project’s potential and adhere to the highest standards of work, reflecting a broader commitment to infrastructure excellence.
