The President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has openly expressed his support for the reappointment of Dr. Carla Barnett as the Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This comes amid growing tensions due to objections from Trinidad and Tobago, causing a discord within the regional bloc. President Ali, speaking in Georgetown, confirmed his involvement in the discussions which led to Dr. Barnett’s reappointment and stated that proper procedures were followed.
The reappointment was given the green light by a majority of CARICOM Heads of Government during the 50th Regular Meeting held in St. Kitts and Nevis. President Ali underscored that the process was in line with the procedures followed during Dr. Barnett’s initial appointment.
However, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has voiced her opposition to the reappointment, arguing that the procedure lacked transparency. She has warned that her country might review its financial contributions to the regional body unless the matter is resolved.
President Ali responded by stating that while all leaders have the right to express their views, the decision to reappoint Dr. Barnett adhered to established democratic protocols. Discussions were held during plenary sessions and caucus meetings of CARICOM Heads of Government, where views were exchanged before a majority decision was reached.
The issue remains unresolved with Trinidad and Tobago registering a formal complaint with the Chairman of CARICOM and the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, indicating that this matter could continue to strain relations within the regional organisation.
