Browne Questions T&T’s Preparedness for UN Security Council Seat

On April 1, 2026, Senator Dr Amery Browne, Former Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister, addressed the Senate, turning the spotlight on Trinidad and Tobago’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027 to 2028 term. Browne disclosed that the country’s candidature had been greenlit by a previous Cabinet and reconfirmed by the current one, with the UN General Assembly elections looming in June 2026.

Trinidad and Tobago, Browne added, had already secured the endorsement of CARICOM, thus positioning the country to echo the region’s voice at the international stage. However, he expressed concerns about the Government’s current foreign policy positions, questioning if they are compatible with the responsibilities incumbent on a Security Council member.

Browne called into question the country’s steadfastness on global conflicts, sanctions, and adherence to international law. He underscored the significance of principle, arguing that Trinidad and Tobago need to adopt a staunch, independent voice anchored in peace, sovereignty, and fairness if it is to take a seat at the Council. To him, the opportunity should serve as a platform to champion the causes of smaller nations and uphold international law, rather than a mere reflection of geopolitical convenience.
