More than 40 people, many of them foreign nationals, have been left homeless after a fire destroyed a three-storey apartment building in Alberttown, Georgetown.
The blaze, which broke out on Tuesday evening, quickly engulfed the mostly wooden structure, forcing residents to flee with little or no belongings. Firefighters battled the flames for over an hour before bringing the situation under control.
Residents described scenes of panic as people rushed to escape, with some managing only to retrieve essential documents before the building was consumed. Many victims reported losing personal belongings, including identification and travel documents.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, while emergency support is expected for those displaced by the incident.
