An unsettling incident took place on Saturday night when a police officer and another individual were stabbed by an intoxicated 75-year-old man. The victims, identified as WPC Lewis of the Port of Spain Task Force and her friend, Roger Chattergoonsingh, were reportedly attacked after Lewis attempted to caution the elderly man about his drunken, obscene behaviour.
During the confrontation, the suspect, who is a male relative of Lewis, stabbed her once on the left side of her chest. When Chattergoonsingh intervened, he too was stabbed in the abdomen. Officers from the Cunupia Police Station quickly responded to the incident and managed to arrest the suspect.
Following the attack, Lewis and Chattergoonsingh were immediately taken to separate health facilities for medical attention. Lewis was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility while Chattergoonsingh was transported to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. The attacker, though arrested, was also taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility for treatment.
Constable Backan, who is currently handling the case, continues his enquiries into the tragic incident. The extent of the victims’ injuries and the current condition of the attacker remain uncertain.
