66 Dead in Colombian Military Plane Crash

A military aviation tragedy occurred in southern Colombia, claiming the lives of at least 66 people and leaving scores injured. The incident involved a C-130 Hercules aircraft shortly after takeoff near Puerto Leguízamo, a region in Putumayo close to the Peruvian border. The aircraft reportedly broke apart on impact and was engulfed in flames. The aircraft was carrying 125 occupants, including 112 members of the Colombian Army and two police officers. Regional Governor Jhon Gabriel Molina confirmed the devastating crash. Following the disaster, Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation, stating that the cause of the crash remains undetermined. Preliminary reports indicate no evidence of criminal activity or hostile fire. The aircraft had been deemed fully airworthy prior to departure, and the crew members were highly trained and fully qualified. As search and rescue teams continue their efforts in the dense Putumayo terrain, the Colombian military has grounded similar transport flights as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.
