After an incredible 144 years of construction, the world’s tallest church, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, has finally reached its pinnacle. This monumental milestone was marked on Friday, as a 17-meter tall, four-sided steel and glass cross was carefully craned to the top of the Tower of Jesus Christ. This addition brings the total height of the church to a staggering 172.5 meters, dwarfing other religious edifices across the globe and marking it as not only the world’s tallest church but also the tallest building in Barcelona.
For decades, locals have grown accustomed to the sight of scaffolding and cranes encircling the iconic structure. The Sagrada Familia, a symbol of Barcelona’s rich history and architectural prowess, has been an ever-evolving masterpiece, its silhouette constantly morphing against the city’s skyline.
The removal of the scaffolding, anticipated to occur before the church’s official inauguration, will reveal a sight many residents have never witnessed.
