The official file related to firearms dealer Brent Thomas has disappeared from the Ministry of Homeland Security, sparking further controversy around Thomas’ 2022 detention in Barbados and return to Trinidad. The file, which reportedly contained crucial documentation and ministerial correspondence, has gone missing, causing diplomatic tension and constitutional issues. The United National Congress (UNC) was informed of the file’s absence upon requesting access. Former Minister Marvin Gonzales stated the file never reached his desk, with Fitzgerald Hinds declining public comment. Political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar described Thomas’ detention and return as a ‘kidnapping’ at the 50th CARICOM Summit, a term rebuffed by Mia Mottley. The High Court previously found the detention and return to amount to an abuse of process, with Trinidad’s government showing intent to negotiate constitutional damages. Currently, compensation negotiations are ongoing, with an internal police investigation and consideration of a Commission of Enquiry in process.
