Landlord Surcharge Registration Begins March 1

Landlords Face New Tax Deadline Starting March 1
Landlords across Trinidad and Tobago are being advised of a new registration requirement under the Landlord Business Surcharge.
Registration begins on Sunday, March 1, 2026, with forms available through the Board of Inland Revenue at ird.gov.tt, according to the Ministry of Finance.
All landlords are required to register by May 30, 2026. Failure to meet the deadline will result in automatic penalties.
Individuals who miss the deadline will face a $1,000 penalty for every six month delay. Corporations will be fined $2,500.
The Ministry has clarified that the surcharge is creditable against final annual tax liabilities, ensuring that rental income is not taxed twice.
The measure follows debate over Clause 19 of the Finance Bill. While some critics argue that the registration process may be challenging for smaller property owners, the government is urging all landlords to comply in order to avoid penalties.
Landlords are encouraged to monitor official Ministry of Finance channels for updates and additional guidance.
