Privy Council Restores Defamation Ruling Against Minister

The Privy Council has reinstated a High Court ruling against Minister Phillip Edward Alexander, who had initially been directed to pay $775,000 to businessman Andrew Gabriel for defamation. The defamation arose from statements made by Alexander during a media interview and a Facebook post on February 8, 2017. Despite the Court of Appeal’s attempt to lessen the award to $10,000 in nominal damages, the Privy Council dismissed this decision, reasserting that the statements made by Alexander implied serious corruption and dishonesty and were found to be defamatory. The case has been returned to the High Court for a reassessment of damages, given that the Privy Council deemed the $10,000 nominal damages as ‘manifestly inadequate’.
