Golda Lee Bruce, a notable media personality from Trinidad and Tobago, was recently part of Oprah’s Book Club discussion, where she posed a personal question to the author Tayari Jones. Bruce, whose father was killed when she was only one, questioned if a person can genuinely be parented by someone who is not their biological parent. This question aligns with themes in Jones’ novel, Kin, where characters are taken care of by non-parental figures. Jones responded by discussing the powerful influence of an ‘imaginary parent’, an idealized figure a person may create in their mind. She emphasized that real individuals can’t compete with this imagined figure but advised not letting it obstruct forging meaningful relationships with actual people. Following the discussion, Bruce expressed her gratitude for the experience, considering it a full-circle moment, having grown up inspired by The Oprah Winfrey Show.
