In a recent public exchange, former councillor, vice-chairman, and the current mayor, Akeliah Glasgow-Warner, defended her home community of Carenage, Trinidad and Tobago against derogatory remarks allegedly made by Phillip Alexander. Alexander, a government minister/senator, reportedly referred to Carenage as a ‘shithole’, sparking outrage among the community. In her response, Glasgow-Warner emphasized the sense of pride and achievement within the community, pointing out that Carenage has been the birthplace of numerous athletes, businesspeople, teachers, police, military, and leaders across political lines. She condemned Alexander’s comment as an insult not just to politicians, but to the entire community and suggested that his words disrespect constituents and undermine national unity. Additionally, Glasgow-Warner reminded voters that they have previously rejected Alexander at the polls and positioned herself as a representative voice of the people of Carenage. She ended her statement by directly addressing Alexander, stating that he has no place speaking on Carenage and that, ‘the only ‘shithole’ I know is your mouth’. This exchange has since fueled wider political debate and highlighted the ongoing tensions in Trinidad and Tobago’s political landscape.
