Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has expressed concerns over potential foreign political intervention in the upcoming general election. This follows the usage of the phrase ‘yellow is the code’ by Barbados opposition leader Ralph Thorne during a TV appearance in Trinidad, a phrase associated with Trinidad and Tobago’s United National Congress. Concerns of foreign interference have also been raised by leaders of St Vincent and St Lucia, with accusations of Trinidadian individuals attempting to influence their general elections. However, there is no confirmed evidence of coordinated election interference by Trinidadian political parties in any of these regions. Regional analysts suggest this reflects an increased sensitivity to cross-border campaigning, financing, and messaging during election seasons.
