Former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith has criticized current Commissioner Allister Guevarro over the non-use of 1,200 police body-worn cameras, accusing him of offering misleading and indefensible explanations. Griffith, who acquired the cameras during his tenure, insists that several of the justifications put forth by Guevarro don’t stand up to scrutiny. He refutes claims about the cameras being a financial burden, or being unusable due to a terminated supporting contract. Griffith also dismissed concerns about officers being able to manipulate the cameras, emphasizing that under his leadership, strict procedures were enforced. He also rejected the assertion that the devices were of poor quality. Griffith has urged the public to independently verify the facts surrounding the body camera program, asserting transparency is key in understanding why the equipment remains unused.
