Former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith has been ordered by the High Court to pay close to $1 million TTD to retired Appeal Court judge Stanley John. The ruling, delivered by High Court Judge Devindra Rampersad, included damages of $750,000, prescribed legal costs of $90,250, and counter-claim costs of $61,500, totalling approximately $901,750. Griffith, who claims he was slandered and denied a fair chance to defend his reputation, said he plans to appeal the decision, possibly as far as the Privy Council. The lawsuit originated from a video posted by Griffith on social media, which contained defamatory statements and reached over 40,000 views. John was hired by the Police Service Commission to investigate firearm users’ licenses issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in 2021. Despite his report describing the licensing process as a criminal enterprise, Griffith was never questioned about it.
