US Risks Losing Measles Elimination Status Due to Outbreaks

The US is on the brink of losing its measles elimination status due to continuous outbreaks over the past year. The largest measles outbreak in decades began in West Texas a year ago, and since then measles cases have been reported every week across the country. In 2025, over 2,200 cases were reported, with Texas alone reporting more than 760 cases and two deaths. Despite declaring the outbreak over, large outbreaks in South Carolina and the Utah–Arizona border region continue to grow, primarily among those not fully vaccinated. Health experts warn that the US could lose its measles elimination status, maintained since 2000, pending a formal international review this spring.
