Trinidad and Tobago: TTUTA’s 2026 Wish List

As Trinidad and Tobago prepares for the 2026 academic cycle, the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) has outlined a detailed agenda that addresses the needs of its members and the broader educational system. Under the leadership of President Crystal Ashe, TTUTA’s priorities reflect a commitment to addressing long-standing structural issues, negotiated labor outcomes, and evolving educational policies.

A significant focus for TTUTA is the prompt implementation of negotiated wage increases and back pay, which have been pressing concerns throughout 2025. In November 2025, Ashe called on the Ministries of Education and Finance for clarity regarding the processing of a five percent salary increase for the period 2020-2023, emphasizing the necessity for transparency in public service compensation. The association seeks concrete timelines for these financial adjustments to ensure educators achieve financial stability after delays in settling outstanding wages.

TTUTA is also engaged in discussions regarding educators’ terms and conditions of service, including healthcare benefits and allowances. Conversations with the Chief Personnel Officer in mid-2025 addressed the expansion of health coverage for retirees and potential revisions to travel allowances for curriculum officers in Tobago.

In addition, TTUTA has raised concerns about infrastructural deficiencies and resource constraints affecting schools. While the Education Ministry initiated numerous repair projects over the July/August period, TTUTA stresses the need for safe and conducive learning environments, advocating for a proactive approach to infrastructure management.

The association also highlights the importance of addressing teacher staffing and professional development. While recent measures, such as the approval of contractual assistant instructors, have been welcomed, TTUTA emphasizes the need for filling established vacancies to ensure quality instruction.

TTUTA’s vision for 2026 includes fostering collaborative governance with educational authorities and stakeholders, advocating for transparency and integrity in policy discussions. As the academic year begins, the Education Ministry has assured that schools are ready to reopen following comprehensive repairs. TTUTA’s agenda prioritizes the realization of these commitments, aiming for a resilient and equitable education system for all stakeholders.

In summary, TTUTA’s agenda for the upcoming academic cycle encompasses a range of issues that are critical to the educational landscape in Trinidad and Tobago. The association is focused on ensuring that educators receive fair compensation, improved healthcare benefits, and adequate resources for teaching and learning. By addressing these concerns, TTUTA aims to create a more effective and supportive environment for both teachers and students.

As discussions continue between TTUTA and government officials, the outcomes of these negotiations will be closely monitored by educators and the public alike. The association’s commitment to advocating for its members and the educational system as a whole remains a central theme as Trinidad and Tobago moves forward into the 2026 academic year.
