Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been arrested in Caracas by the United States military. The arrests are related to a newly filed indictment alleging their involvement in decades-long cocaine trafficking and state-sponsored narco-terrorism. The indictment accuses Maduro, his family, and senior Venezuelan officials of conspiring to import thousands of tonnes of cocaine into the United States. The accused allegedly used state institutions, military resources, and diplomatic privileges to facilitate drug trafficking operations. Prosecutors claim that drug shipments were escorted by military units, transported using state-controlled aircraft, and coordinated with international criminal organisations. The indictment also alleges corruption across multiple transit routes, including Central America and the Caribbean. US officials stated that the operation was executed without civilian casualties, and both Maduro and Flores have been formally indicted in the Southern District of New York. Venezuela’s government has condemned the arrests as politically motivated.
