Minister Supports Doubling Traffic Fines

Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Eli Zakour has defended the decision to double traffic fines, stating it is necessary to improve road safety and deter dangerous driving behaviour. Zakour believes that existing penalties have lost their deterrent effect, resulting in reckless driving continuing unchecked. He argues that the increased fines reflect the seriousness of traffic offences, particularly those resulting in fatalities, injuries, and repeat offences. The minister insists that law-abiding road users will not be affected, as these fines target habitual traffic rule breakers. The changes implemented via Legal Notices amending the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act have doubled most traffic fines and will take effect from January 1, 2026. The government has linked these fine increases to a broader road safety framework aimed at reducing road deaths, injuries, and collisions. Despite public debate and criticism surrounding the timing, consultation process, and financial burden on motorists, the minister maintains that the policy is about correcting behaviour rather than generating revenue.
