China has announced sanctions against 20 U.S. defense-related companies and 10 senior U.S. executives in response to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. The sanctions, which China describes as a response to U.S. arms sales that violate the One China principle and interfere with China’s internal affairs, include freezing any assets these companies or individuals hold in China, prohibiting business transactions between these entities and Chinese companies or individuals, and placing travel bans on the sanctioned individuals, barring them from entering China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Some of the targeted companies include Boeing’s St. Louis defense operations, Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, and L3Harris Maritime Services, while some of the sanctioned individuals include Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, and other senior executives from the affected companies. The sanctions are a direct response to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan worth over $11 billion, which Beijing has strongly criticized. Taiwan is a self-governing democratic island that China claims as its own territory.
