The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, a long-awaited initiative, is nearing fruition. Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo has revealed the fund is in the process of being established, with plans to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2026. This follows the passing of the Finance Bill on December 5. The purpose of the fund is to provide compensation for victims of road accidents caused by uninsured drivers, a past issue that left many victims bereft of any support. The revised legislation also introduces stricter penalties for a host of traffic offences, such as driving without insurance, using false insurance, operating a vehicle without valid authorization, overloading, reckless driving, driving under the influence, and driving whilst disqualified.
