Man with 25 pending cases gets bail again for robbery

A 35-year-old Arima man with 25 pending criminal matters was granted bail after being charged with robbing a woman in a supermarket car park in Chaguanas last Friday.

Nickail Julien, of Mahogany Drive, Malabar, appeared before High Court Master Rhea Libert yesterday and received bail set at $75,000.

Police prosecutors argued against granting bail, pointing to Julien’s extensive criminal history, which includes unresolved firearm, robbery, and shooting charges. They also highlighted that the alleged robbery occurred while he was already out on bail.

Julien’s attorney, Bhimal Maharajh, disagreed with their objections. He said Julien had consistently attended court for all his other matters and there was nothing to suggest he would flee if released again. Maharajh further stated that Julien denied involvement in the robbery, claiming he had simply been hired to transport two men to and from the location. He also noted that the victim did not identify Julien during an identification parade.

Under his bail conditions, Julien must avoid any contact with the victim and report to the nearest police station once each week until the case is resolved. The matter has been transferred to the Chaguanas District Court and is scheduled for hearing on December 16.

The incident allegedly occurred on Ramsaran Street, where the woman was robbed of two gold beras and a gold chain worth a total of $15,500.
